Enlightening children about Cyberbullying.

Bullying comes in a lot of different forms. It can be either physical or mentally, but also online. For a lot of bullies, it's a lot easier to bully their victims online, as there are no direct consequences attached to it. With the growth of social media and the decreasing age of which children participate in this online world, the cyberbullying is only increasing. Cyberbullying Research center (2024) has done research on online bullying. From their research states that in 2022 21.6% of the 19.2% of students who were bullied said they had been bullied “online or by text.” This is an increase from the 15.8% who reported being bullied online or by text in the previous survey, administered in 2019. A significant increase compared to the earlier years. With social media developing itself further and further, It’s important for children to know what dangers come with it: such as cyberbullying.

In my further research on cyberbullying I came past this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ctd75a7_Yw (or see bottom of this article). It’s a short video with the target group being children. In the video it explains what bullying is, what types of bullying there are and what the difference is between bullying and cyberbullying. It explains how cyberbullying can happen and what you can do if you see it happening.

I think it’s a perfect video for children to understand what cyberbullying is. It’s short but very powerful. The video explains the terms with easy understanding words and the use of ‘puppets’ is sure to attract the attention of children. It’s a good conversation starter about cyberbullying to use in class for example. Eventhough the video was posted in 2018, the problem of cyberbullying is still just as relevant.

In conclusion, cyberbullying has been getting more and more throughout the years. It’s important that children are aware of this problem and know what do to about it. The video What's Cyberbullying? From Common sense education (2018)  Explains very well to children what cyberbullying is and the dangers that come with it. It’s a very informative and short video that could be used to enlighten children about the subject of cyberbullying.

  1. Thank you for sharing this blog. This video is very clear for children to learn more about bullying, and it also encourages them to report it if they witness this type of harassment. It can be an important tool for schools and teachers to raise awareness among students about this phenomenon.

Considering the findings of this research and how much cyberbullying has increased, it is our collective responsibility to work together to combat bullying, as it is more complex than we might think.

Once again, thank you for sharing!

Brian Giner and PDA Bullying platform

Following my last post, where I talked about the documentary Acoso Escolar from ARTE.tv, I caught my attention the figure of Brian Giner, so I decided to look into his book Golpeado pero no derrotado It’s a work for all ages in which he shares his personal experience during his school years. The author emphasizes that the book isn’t just meant for students, but also for parents and professors. Through his story, he hopes to raise awareness about the importance of taking action in cases of bullying. Apart from publishing his book, he also gives talks on bullying prevention to students in the first to third years of ESO in catalan high schools. Based on his own experience, Brian aims to shed light on cases like his so that victims don’t feel alone and can see an example of resilience. While researching his book, I came across a very interesting platform called PDA Bullying . It’s a collaborative initiative involving various institutions aimed at promoting best practices for the...

Salutogenic approach and a personal opinion

As I briefly mentioned in my previous post, on the website called PDA Bullying , among various resources, there is a section dedicated to explain the Salutogenic approach . After doing some research, it becomes clear that this approach gets its name because its main goal is to promote health and well-being . The platform aims to address bullying from this perspective, adopting a strength-based approach that focuses on individuals' potential and the creation of a cooperative community working toward a shared goal . It slightly reminds me of the No Blame Approach we studied in class, as it also refers to a method based on compassion and a solution-focused outlook , rather than assigning blame. Their aim is not simply to act against bullying, but rather to overcome it , moving beyond a simplistic understanding of bullying as just a dynamic between two individuals. Instead, they view it as a broader social process . For this reason, the protocol designed and implemented by...

Guidelines for Bullying in German Schools

In Germany, the Ministry of Education published guidelines for schools on how to deal with bullying in schools. The following characteristics identify bullying: Intent to Harm, Repetition, Power Imbalance, and Helplessness. If bullying is detected, they provide teachers with 5 steps to follow. First, they should act immediately. This includes halting any aggressive behavior and ensuring the victim is safe. Also, they are obliged to assess if the already mentioned bullying criteria are met. Then, Teachers and school staff need to discuss the situation with colleagues to decide on the best course of action. This might involve engaging the victim and the bully in separate conversations and determining the next steps. Lastly, the victim should be provided with support to offer a safe school environment again In addition to the teacher guidelines, there are also ones for School Leadership Teams. First, they have to ensure that anti-bullying policies are being followed. This includes suppor...
