What kids have to say about bullying and how to end it - TedTalk

I was browsing the internet when I came across this heartbreaking video where a mother shares how her daughter took her own life due to cyberbullying. Tina explains the nightmare her family endured when her daughter, Megan, was being bullied. At first, changing schools and putting distance between Megan and her aggressors was effective. However, once the bullying moved online, it became unstoppable.  What shocked me the most was discovering that behind the MySpace account that tormented Megan was not just another teenager, but a mother with two daughters... It’s deeply troubling to realize that some families respond to bullying (or even to a perceived situation of it) with even more bullying, without considering its terrible effects.

Series: 13 reasons why

Hello everyone. Today I want to take a look at the consequences that violence and school bullying can have, by using the series “13 reasons why” as an example. Firstly, I want to let you know that the following text addresses suicide, harassment and sexual violence. If dealing with these topics may distress you, consider not reading this article.   “13 reasons why” is a series about a girl named Hanah Baker, who died by suicide. After her death , she leaves behind 13 recorded tapes, which elaborate on the experiences leading to her suicide. These tapes include stories about harassment, bullying and sexual violence. In the following I will give you examples of the tapes she recorded. On tape number two Hannah addresses one of her classmates, who secretly took photos of her and published them without her consent. These photos include Hannah kissing another girl in her room. This portrays an example of cyberbullying as the pictures were sent around in her class. Furthermore, lies...

Movie 'Spijt'

If you’re looking for a powerful and emotional movie that sheds light on the reality of bullying, you should watch  Spijt! (Regret). The movie is about  Jochem, a boy who is relentlessly bullied at school both physically and verbally. The movie explores various forms of bullying, showcasing not only the bullies themselves but also the bystanders and those who enable the cruelty. It also highlights the reasons behind bullying, as Jochem becomes a target due to his weight. Additionally, the film portrays individuals who attempt to stand up for Jochem, only to be intimidated by the bullies, causing them to retreat in fear. Besides all of the bullying the movie also shows its consequences. You see how Jochem struggles, how his confidence is broken, how he feels completely alone and how he selfharms. When I first watched this movie as a child, it had a huge impact on me. The ending, in particular, was something I’ll never forget. It made me more aware of the effects of bullying an...

New Definition of Bullying

Hi everyone! The World Anti-Bullying Forum, together with UNESCO, created a Working group for establishing a new definition of school bullying. Its new definition keeps the idea that bullying requires unwanted repetitive aggressiveness and imbalance of power, and adds the idea that this power imbalance is supported by societal and institutional norms. The emphasis is now in the idea that bullying is not an affair among students but a social process. The new definition is this one: School bullying is a damaging social process that is characterized by an imbalance of power driven by social (societal) and institutional norms. It is often repeated and manifests as unwanted interpersonal behaviour among students or school personnel that causes physical, social, and emotional harm to the targeted individuals or groups, and the wider school community. You can find the document where it is explained  here . Fes
