If you’re looking for a powerful and emotional movie that sheds light on the reality of bullying, you should watch Spijt! (Regret). The movie is about Jochem, a boy who is relentlessly bullied at school both physically and verbally.
The movie explores various forms of bullying, showcasing not only the bullies themselves but also the bystanders and those who enable the cruelty. It also highlights the reasons behind bullying, as Jochem becomes a target due to his weight. Additionally, the film portrays individuals who attempt to stand up for Jochem, only to be intimidated by the bullies, causing them to retreat in fear.
Besides all of the bullying the movie also shows its consequences. You see how Jochem struggles, how his confidence is broken, how he feels completely alone and how he selfharms.
When I first watched this movie as a child, it had a huge impact on me. The ending, in particular, was something I’ll never forget. It made me more aware of the effects of bullying and how devastating it can be for the victim. Too often, people don’t realize the emotional and psychological toll bullying takes until it’s too late. This film is an eye-opener, showing how important it is to stand up for others and to create a culture of kindness and support.
If you haven’t seen Spijt! yet, I highly recommend it. You can rent it on Amazon Prime, and it comes with English and Spanish subtitles :)
