Media Heroes: A Cyberbullying Prevention Program in Germany

Hello everyone! In class, we have been discussing about cyberbullying, so I have been researching ways to prevent this phenomenon. I want to share my findings with you, as this resource can help provide more tools for preventing cyberbullying in the field of psychology.

Cyberbullying is a form of intentional and repeated aggression carried out through electronic devices, usually via social media. This phenomenon is associated with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, risky behaviors, suicidal thoughts, and more.

In 2016, The Canadian Journal of Psychiatry published a study investigating various school-based prevention methods. One of these was Media Heroes, a German program designed to increase empathy and social responsibility in the use of technology.

This program was developed in Germany by psychologists and educators and is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. This theory states that intentions and behaviors are shaped by three key factors: a personal determinant, a social influence, and a control-related factor. The main objectives of Media Heroes are to reduce cyberbullying, promote ethical and empathetic technology use, foster social responsibility online, and teach strategies to defend oneself and help others.

Although the program is implemented in schools, it also includes family education, recognizing the crucial role of parents in cyberbullying prevention. The method consists of ten 90-minute sessions for students, covering various topics to help them understand and empathize with victims of cyberbullying. The sessions include:

  • Defining cyberbullying and analyzing real-life examples.

  • Engaging in discussions where students explore questions such as, What would you do if you witnessed cyberbullying?

  • Role-playing activities to develop empathy by stepping into the victim’s shoes.

  • Learning about online safety strategies, such as not forwarding offensive messages, blocking and reporting aggressors, and configuring social media settings for privacy.

  • Highlighting the crucial role of bystanders in cyberbullying situations. The program provides tools to help bystanders intervene effectively, as their response can either stop or worsen the aggression.

  • Encouraging students to become active agents of change by creating positive content for anti-bullying campaigns.

Legislation also plays a key role in preventing cyberbullying. The German government has implemented laws to promote online safety and combat cyber harassment.

A study assessing the effectiveness of the Media Heroes program found a 20–30% reduction in cyberbullying behaviors in German schools. Additionally, there was an increase in empathetic sensitivity among both aggressors and bystanders. Research also suggests that programs like this can have positive effects on traditional bullying as well.

New Definition of Bullying

Hi everyone! The World Anti-Bullying Forum, together with UNESCO, created a Working group for establishing a new definition of school bullying. Its new definition keeps the idea that bullying requires unwanted repetitive aggressiveness and imbalance of power, and adds the idea that this power imbalance is supported by societal and institutional norms. The emphasis is now in the idea that bullying is not an affair among students but a social process. The new definition is this one: School bullying is a damaging social process that is characterized by an imbalance of power driven by social (societal) and institutional norms. It is often repeated and manifests as unwanted interpersonal behaviour among students or school personnel that causes physical, social, and emotional harm to the targeted individuals or groups, and the wider school community. You can find the document where it is explained  here . Fes

Salutogenic approach and a personal opinion

As I briefly mentioned in my previous post, on the website called PDA Bullying , among various resources, there is a section dedicated to explain the Salutogenic approach . After doing some research, it becomes clear that this approach gets its name because its main goal is to promote health and well-being . The platform aims to address bullying from this perspective, adopting a strength-based approach that focuses on individuals' potential and the creation of a cooperative community working toward a shared goal . It slightly reminds me of the No Blame Approach we studied in class, as it also refers to a method based on compassion and a solution-focused outlook , rather than assigning blame. Their aim is not simply to act against bullying, but rather to overcome it , moving beyond a simplistic understanding of bullying as just a dynamic between two individuals. Instead, they view it as a broader social process . For this reason, the protocol designed and implemented by...

The Simpsons: Bull-E

Bull-E - The Simpsons (Season 26, Episode 21) The Simpsons has reflected bullying as a complex issue through their episodes, whether through Bart’s pranks, Nelson’s struggles, or Springfield’s collective response, the show highlights the importance of addressing bullying thoughtfully and empathetically.  Many schools and communities have anti-bullying policies, but the debates arise about how to enforce them without oppressing free expression or over-penalizing minor infractions. The episode of The Simpsons reflects these concerns by showing the challenges of finding a balance. It highlights how good intentions, like preventing bullying (passing an Anti-Bullying law), can sometimes go way too far, leading to unintended consequences. Also, it brings up the difficulty of bullying’s definition, what feels like bullying to one person might seem harmless to another, that is Homer’s storyline, which reminds us that our words and actions, even if unintended, can impact on others d...
