Series: 13 reasons why

Hello everyone. Today I want to take a look at the consequences that violence and school bullying can have, by using the series “13 reasons why” as an example. Firstly, I want to let you know that the following text addresses suicide, harassment and sexual violence. If dealing with these topics may distress you, consider not reading this article.

“13 reasons why” is a series about a girl named Hanah Baker, who died by suicide. After her death, she leaves behind 13 recorded tapes, which elaborate on the experiences leading to her suicide. These tapes include stories about harassment, bullying and sexual violence. In the following I will give you examples of the tapes she recorded. On tape number two Hannah addresses one of her classmates, who secretly took photos of her and published them without her consent. These photos include Hannah kissing another girl in her room. This portrays an example of cyberbullying as the pictures were sent around in her class. Furthermore, lies and sexual rumors about Hannah were spread at her school. In addition to that, another student created a list, which rated Hannah’s body in comparison to other girls. This list was passed around in her class and was used to sexualize Hannah and make fun of her. Another significant factor contributing to Hannah’s suicide was that she was raped by one of her classmates. This is an example for sexual violence. Subsequently, Hannah reached out to the school counselor as an attempt to find help. However, he did not take her experiences seriously, which made Hannah lose any remaining hope. This underlines the crucial role of the school in cases of violence and bullying. After talking to the school counselor, Hannah went back home and then died by suicide. These were only a few examples of Hannah’s experiences with harassment, bullying and violence, nevertheless, they have played a huge part in her death by suicide. Obviously, it is important to bear in mind that this series is fictional. However, it can still be used to take a look at the consequences that bullying may have on one individual. The series “13 reasons why” is available on Netflix and has been used as the source of this blogpost.

  1. It's a great series for highlighting the consequences of bullying. I watched it when I was younger, and it had a significant impact on me. I think it's important to share these kinds of messages to raise awareness—not just among individuals but also within schools. It encourages people to be more mindful of their behavior and reminds schools to pay closer attention so that when students reach out for help, they can receive the support they need.

  2. I believe “13 Reasons Why” serves as a powerful example of bullying and the devastating consequences it can have on someone's life. It also highlights how adults often fail to recognize or address the issues, sometimes overlooking the signs. In this case, the situation is even more extreme, as the protagonist directly confided in the counselor about what was happening. You did a great job and described it perfectly, and your words reminded me of the many deep discussions my friends and I had while watching it, as it had such a profound impact on all of us.

  3. The other day in class, we discussed some of the posts our classmates had shared on the forum. One of them was about this series. This series was one of the first I watched when I started high school, and it truly left a profound impact on me. It’s important not only to share but also to raise awareness about the effects that actions like bullying can have on people. It’s not just a situation where an aggressor harms a victim; there’s a broader context (teachers, classmates ….) that plays a crucial role in intervening and putting an end to this type of aggression.

After that class, I came home and started the series again, and just finished it yesterday. With age, I've experienced it differently: I've been able to delve deeper into the characters, understand the background of each scene, and reflect on the seriousness that a series of actions can be. Although I think it's a series everyone should watch at some point in their lives, I also think not everyone is ready to do so, as it addresses very difficult topics such as suicide, rape, bullying, and agressions.

  4. I think this series is a truly powerful example on this topic. Also, it combines another very important topic to learn about: Suicide. This is also a very important topic for students to learn about. I think in class it would be a good combination to use this series to learn about both. As Laura also mentioned, it gives you a totally other perspective if you rewatched this as an adult. Therefore, this series is not only important to watch for adolescence but also for parents to gain an in depth understanding

Brian Giner and PDA Bullying platform

Following my last post, where I talked about the documentary Acoso Escolar from ARTE.tv, I caught my attention the figure of Brian Giner, so I decided to look into his book Golpeado pero no derrotado It’s a work for all ages in which he shares his personal experience during his school years. The author emphasizes that the book isn’t just meant for students, but also for parents and professors. Through his story, he hopes to raise awareness about the importance of taking action in cases of bullying. Apart from publishing his book, he also gives talks on bullying prevention to students in the first to third years of ESO in catalan high schools. Based on his own experience, Brian aims to shed light on cases like his so that victims don’t feel alone and can see an example of resilience. While researching his book, I came across a very interesting platform called PDA Bullying . It’s a collaborative initiative involving various institutions aimed at promoting best practices for the...

Salutogenic approach and a personal opinion

As I briefly mentioned in my previous post, on the website called PDA Bullying , among various resources, there is a section dedicated to explain the Salutogenic approach . After doing some research, it becomes clear that this approach gets its name because its main goal is to promote health and well-being . The platform aims to address bullying from this perspective, adopting a strength-based approach that focuses on individuals' potential and the creation of a cooperative community working toward a shared goal . It slightly reminds me of the No Blame Approach we studied in class, as it also refers to a method based on compassion and a solution-focused outlook , rather than assigning blame. Their aim is not simply to act against bullying, but rather to overcome it , moving beyond a simplistic understanding of bullying as just a dynamic between two individuals. Instead, they view it as a broader social process . For this reason, the protocol designed and implemented by...

Guidelines for Bullying in German Schools

In Germany, the Ministry of Education published guidelines for schools on how to deal with bullying in schools. The following characteristics identify bullying: Intent to Harm, Repetition, Power Imbalance, and Helplessness. If bullying is detected, they provide teachers with 5 steps to follow. First, they should act immediately. This includes halting any aggressive behavior and ensuring the victim is safe. Also, they are obliged to assess if the already mentioned bullying criteria are met. Then, Teachers and school staff need to discuss the situation with colleagues to decide on the best course of action. This might involve engaging the victim and the bully in separate conversations and determining the next steps. Lastly, the victim should be provided with support to offer a safe school environment again In addition to the teacher guidelines, there are also ones for School Leadership Teams. First, they have to ensure that anti-bullying policies are being followed. This includes suppor...
